内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 It is widely known that the 1917 October Revolution established the Soviet Union as the world’s first socialist nation: it lasted until its dissolution in 1991. The influence of the revolution extended to China, where an economy of public ownership was established in the 1950s, which has also undergone tremendous changes since 1978 with its opening to the outside world and reforms to the system of public ownership. Today, private enterprise has become the dominant component of China’s industrial landscape and constitutes the primary engine of China’s industrial development. The once ubiquitous rural people’s communes were abolished by the State in 1983. What accounts for the survival of Japan’s New Village (Atarashiki Mura), with its communist characteristics, from its founding 100 years ago to the present day? What has been the source of its vitality? The present study assesses Japan’s New Village and rural Chinese people’s communes against the three key elements necessary for organizations that were proposed in Barnard’s seminal work on organization and management, The Functions of the Executive (1968). The results indicate that the New Village surpasses people’s communes in Barnard’s three areas of communication, willingness to serve, and common purpose.
